William Shakespeare was married in Temple Grafton church in the year 1582 to one Ann Whateley. The name Whateley is thought to be a misspelling of Hathaway.
The Parish of Temple Grafton is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 as being owned by a man named Gilbert - it covered an area of some 600 acres with a population of around 80.
The parish was valued at around £4.00.
The longest ownership of the manor was by the Sheldon family who held it from 1548 to 1675. Grafton Court now stands on this site and some of the stained glass windows depict scenes from Shakespeare’s plays and Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. The oldest part of The Blue Boar dates from the early 1600’s and records show that it has been an ale house since that time, It is possible to trace the names of the individual landlords and their families since 1776.
The glass covered well in the restaurant bar is some 35 feet deep and its pure water has been used in the brewing process for many years.
Cooler Autumn days bring to life some of the four open fires in the bar and restaurant areas, whereas the sunshine of spring offers the opportunity to relax outside in our patio garden and enjoy the extensive views towards the Cotswold Hills.
